Selby Tiger Sharks make a splash with £1,000 donation!

Selby Tiger Sharks Swimming Club has received £1,000 from the Pavers Foundation to purchase some new starting blocks for galas and competitions! Tina Pinder, Head of HR at Pavers Head Office in York applied to support the club that her daughter, Gracie, attends weekly.

Gracie is 11 years old and joined Selby Tiger Sharks Swimming Club 2 years ago. When Gracie first started, she was swimming just 1 hour a week. 2 years on, she now swims for 8 hours a week and regularly competes in galas and competitions at sports centres across Yorkshire.

The club has a total of 66 swimmers ranging from 8-18 years old. 42 of these swimmers compete in galas and competitions around the county, including the Yorkshire Championship and Regionals. Selby Tiger Sharks encourages swimmers to increase their stamina, fitness and technique so that they’re able to compete in these competitive settings.

“Selby Tiger Sharks is an inclusive, competitive swimming club for swimmers in the local community. The club ethos and mantra is for swimmers to challenge themselves and be the best they can be, supported by a fantastic team of coaches but just as importantly, in a fun, friendly environment. Team spirit and attitude is a hugely important characteristic of the club – if the environment is right, the swimmers achieve.

The club frequently competes in major swim meets, with increasing numbers of swimmers taking part. Our squad are winning medals with increasing frequency and consistently smashing personal bests. Seeing the effort and dedication of the swimmers pay off when they podium finish, with a medal around their neck and delivering performances that exceed their expectations, is a truly rewarding experience. Our club committee goal and ambition is to foster team spirit and maintain this friendly environment but also providing our members and coaches with the tools they require to continue to grow and achieve.”

Selby Tiger Sharks regularly raise funds to support the upkeep of the club. Fundraising efforts this year include a sponsored triathlon, which covered the length of the A1 motorway, in which both parents and children took part in! As part of this triathlon, Tina completed 36k on a bike!

“The funding we have received from the Pavers Foundation is being spent on competition starting blocks – allowing all our swimmers to practice and train in an environment that mirrors that of a competition. If we can continue to give our swimmers these experiences, they will be familiar with their surroundings once they are on the blocks at these hugely competitive galas.

Our sincere thanks go to the Pavers Foundation, you’ve made a massive difference to our club and we are extremely grateful.”

“I am incredibly grateful for the support the Pavers Foundation has provided to Selby Tiger Sharks. Since swimming for the club my daughter, Gracie, has grown in confidence and she has made some fantastic new friends. Watching her achieve a new personal best at a competition always fills me with pride and I can’t wait to see her continue to grow in both ability and confidence”.
